Biologists learn structure, mechanism of powerful 'molecular motor' in virus Wed, 24 Dec 2008 12:00:00 EST Researchers have discovered the atomic structure of a powerful "molecular motor" that packages DNA into the head segment of some viruses during their assembly, an essential step in their ability to multiply and infect new host organisms.
The researchers, from Purdue University and The Catholic University of America, also have proposed a mechanism for how the motor works. Parts of the motor move in sequence like the pistons in a car's engine, progressively drawing the genetic material into the virus's head, or capsid, said Michael Rossmann, Purdue's Hanley Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences.
Economist: Recession adds uncertainty to 2009 farmland leases Wed, 24 Dec 2008 11:29:00 EST No business partnership seems unaffected by the recession, including one of agriculture's most common, said Craig Dobbins, a Purdue University agricultural economist.
Farmland owners and their tenant farmers might have to negotiate longer and harder to come up with a mutually acceptable rental rate for the 2009 crop season, Dobbins said. He urged renters to do their homework before entering into negotiations, especially if they plan to reopen existing rental agreements.
The educational workshops, co-sponsored by the Indiana Soybean Alliance and the Indiana Corn Marketing Council, will provide farmers with information about global demand, where opportunities exist and production management in terms of agronomics, as well as the economics.
